About Us: History, Staff Details and Out-of-Hours Care

Veterinary Surgeon Martin Atkinson qualified from Liverpool University in 1975 and spent the first four years gaining experience in general practice in various parts of the country. He settled at his present surgery in West Drayton and worked for the previous owner before taking over on his own in 1981. The surgery was extensively enlarged and modernised in 1986 and renamed St Martins Veterinary Clinic after the local parish - an image of a church appears in the practice logo to signify this link. A policy of continual reinvestment and upgrading of the premises and practice equipment has been followed since then making the clinic one of the best equipped small veterinary practices in the country. We continue to maintain links with, and support, the local community.

Mr Atkinson has remained the sole veterinary surgeon and believes that this gives an important personal service to you and means that your pet will nearly always see the same vet, ensuring continuity of care.

Mr Atkinson is happy to see all pet species but has gained a special reputation for the treatment of cats and has pioneered several novel treatment protocols in feline medicine. In particular he is one of the most experienced vets in the world in using feline interferons for the treatment of viral disease in cats.

Mr Atkinson has had several scientific articles published in veterinary journals and is a regular contributor to local and national publications so that pets elsewhere are also able to benefit from his expertise.

All our staff undertake continuing professional development to ensure that your pets receive the best possible care. You can be assured that we are using the very latest investigative procedures and innovative treatment which keeps the clinic at the cutting edge of veterinary science.

There is currently a nursing staff of three:

  • Charlotte Mathieson (Pet Health Counsellor)
  • Charlotte Plummer
  • Jenny Ryan

Out-of-Hours Care

For many years we have taken great pride in providing our own 24hr emergency cover, and whenever practical we will continue to do so, however it has become increasingly difficult and expensive to provide this service at all times. We've always believed that your pet's needs out of normal hours are best served by being able to see veterinary surgeons and nurses who are not already tired from working a full day and are ready and waiting to deal with emergencies only. When you call our clinic out-of-hours, if our own veterinary surgeon is not on call, you will be directed by an answerphone message, or your call will be transferred, to a local emergency provider. You needn't worry that this will disrupt your pets' normal care as they will be discharged back to us in normal hours for continuing treatment.
